Varna and the Varna Bay offer some of the best conditions for sea sports in Bulgaria. The sheltered bay, wide sandy beaches, and the characteristic sea breeze create an excellent environment for active recreation most of the year. From late spring to early autumn, the sea is calm and ideal for paddleboarding, wakeboarding, and jet skiing, while on days with steadier winds the bay becomes a favourite spot for windsurfing and sailing. This combination of predictable conditions and variety attracts both enthusiasts and professionals from across the country and abroad.
Varna truly bears the name “the city of festivals.” As early as 1926, with the beginning of the first “Bulgarian National Music Celebrations,” the foundation was laid for a vibrant and enduring tradition that continues to shape the cultural identity of the city today.
Opera, musicals, and ballet performances under the open sky transform the Summer Theatre in Varna into one of the most attractive cultural venues during the summer season. With more than 15 editions behind it, Opera at the Summer Theatre has established itself as one of the most anticipated highlights in Varna’s cultural calendar, continually enriching its repertoire and drawing an ever-growing audience each year.
The traditional “Galata-Varna” swimming marathon has established itself as one of the city’s most iconic sporting events. It is the oldest swimming competition of its kind in Bulgaria. Held annually since 1939, the event will celebrate its 86th edition in 2026.
In 2016 a new "Recreational and Entertainment Zone at the Port of Varna" with area of 2.7 ha was set apart. In partnership between the Municipality of Varna and the Port of Varna this area has been socialised and has been turned into an attractive pedestrian alley with free access for all the residents and visitors of the city.
